Patrick Gallant was waiting for a fuel truck on January 13, 1984, when he heard a loud noise from the wharf area. Investigating, he found the truck sinking in the hole where it had broken through the ice. After alerting co-workers, he saw the driver, apparently unconscious, break the surface. Mr. Gallant jumped the 3-metres to the ice and crawled across the cracking surface toward the victim. Having seized the driver by the collar, he was pulling him onto the ice when it gave way. Mr. Gallant, with considerable and persistent effort, managed to pull himself out, then the victim.
