On 17 August 1979 Garth Evans saved a six-year-old boy from drowning at Sandspit, British Columbia. Mr. Evans and his wife had parked their car at the end of the dock to enjoy a picnic lunch. They noticed the young boy holding on to his bike and walking very near the edge of the wharf. Then he fell into the water. Mr. Evans ran over, looked down the six metre drop and saw the child lying motionless, the water coming over his face. Garth Evans, an inexperienced swimmer, jumped in the ten metre deep water, managed to grab the child around the chest, towed him to a log some distance away, pushed him onto it and assisted him in sliding along it in order to reach a ladder tied to the dock. There he was assisted by neighbours whom his wife had fetched in the meantime. Apart from a cold and a fright, the child suffered no injuries.
