Medal of Bravery
Charles and Keith Duncan, aged 11 and 8 at the time, went fishing with an elderly clergyman in a swiftly flowing stream near Ocean Falls, B.C., on May 20, 1968. Suddenly the man slipped off the rocks into the stream and, weighted down by his heavy clothing, was unable to reach the shore. Hearing his cries for help, the two boys dove into the stream, swam to either side of the minister who was himself a poor swimmer and towed him to shore. There, the steep rock-face posed a serious problem. The younger boy, Keith, managed to clamber out and use his knife to gain a hand hold. The second boy was able to assist his brother and the two together succeeded in bringing the elderly man to safety.
