On December 8, 1984, at about 11 p.m., off-duty R.C.M.P. Cst. Laurier Cadieux was enjoying a meal at the Keg restaurant in Langley, British Columbia, when he heard two shotgun blasts. He immediately investigated only to encounter a woman brandishing a revolver whom he then overpowered and disarmed. He heard another shot, turned and saw a man holding a sawed-off shotgun who fled up some stairs; Cst Cadieux pursued and confronted him with the weapon taken from the woman. He discovered the weapon was defective, but decided to bluff: he identified himself as a policeman, telling the man to lay down his weapon. The man complied but, realizing the bluff, lunged forward. A struggle ensued and, with the help of restaurant staff and patrons, the man was overpowered. Meanwhile, the woman was rescued by a third accomplice and both fled the premises. Police arrived shortly thereafter and took the remaining man into custody. The others, along with a fourth accomplice, were later arrested and charged.
