Graham Butt saved a six-year-old boy from drowning, in a partly frozen pond at New Harbour, on January 15, 1975. The boy and two youngsters of the same age were venturing on the ice when the child plunged into the water. The children's cries for help drew the attention of Mr. Butt who raced to the scene and found the young victim clinging to the ice, some thirty feet from shore. When almost within reach of the lad, Mr. Butt, himself, broke through the thin surface and was completely immersed in the freezing water. Scuttling to safety, he searched the shoreline where a length of wood was found and then returned to the victim. Wading chest-deep in the freezing water, he managed to hook the boy's boot and drew him to the edge. The inert body was lifted onto the shelf of ice and promptly resuscitated. Were it not for Graham Butt's fortitude and cool-headedness, the youngster would almost certainly have lost his life.
