John Bruce, M.B. Medal of Bravery On November 9, 1971, John Bruce went to the rescue of a man whose canoe had capsized in the icy waters of Loon Lake. Mr. Bruce was driving by the lake when he saw a figure threshing about in the water. He ran down to the waterside and using a door ripped from a shed, broke the ice on the perimeter of the lake, before starting to make his way towards the victim. His first attempt was not successful and he then manoeuvred a small wooden raft out into the lake. On Mr. Bruce's direction, the two exhausted men held on to the raft and paddled with their hands, safely to shore.
