Staff Inspector Edward Damien Hegney, M.B.
Constable George Kaldis, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On November 8, 1994, Staff Insp. Hegney and Police Cst. Kaldis pursued and apprehended a perpetrator following an armoured vehicle robbery in Toronto, Ontario. Two men armed with powerful assault rifles had attacked a guard during a delivery in a Toronto mall. One accomplice had fled in a get-away vehicle, crashed the car and abandoned it, and ran down a steep wooded ravine surrounded by a populated area. Fearing that innocent bystanders might be harmed, Staff Insp. Hegney and Cst. Kaldis rushed to the scene and began tracking the culprit down the slippery embankment until they finally spotted him by the river. With no radio communication, no back up and only one revolver between the two of them, the officers decided to attempt an arrest to prevent a tragedy. They split up, ambushed the man and succeeded in capturing him.
