Early on the morning of November 4, 1990, twelve-year-old Tiffiney Betts rescued six members of her family from their burning house in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Awakened by the smell of smoke, she dropped to the floor, crawled through the house and outside for fresh air, then returned to waken her older sister and lead her outside. She re-entered to arouse two other sisters, took them out, then entered the house again to rescue her step-mother who was sleeping on a bed surrounded by flames. Miss Betts and her step-mother then helped the children's father out of the house. Realizing that her baby sister was still inside, Miss Betts entered the burning house for the fourth time and brought her to safety. She then ran to a gas station and asked the attendant to call the fire department.
