In the early hours of the morning of 5 March 1982, Wayne Baxter, assisted in the rescue of his neighbour who was overcome by smoke during a house fire. When told that fire had broken out at his neighbours' house, Mr. Baxter dashed across the street and learned that the woman was still inside. He made several attempts to enter the house but the thick smoke forced him back each time. Knowing that the victim was in imminent danger of succumbing and that every second mattered, Mr. Baxter tried again with the woman's husband following a few steps behind. They inched their way to the master bedroom, found the woman prostrate on the floor and, while the flames raged out of control, dragged her outside. Though himself severely incapacitated by smoke inhalation, Mr. Baxter revived the victim by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
