Medal of Bravery
On November 22, 1985, at around 7:30 p.m., four boys were playing on their bicycles on the ice along the shore of Lac des Quinze et Rémigny, Quebec. On a dare, two of the boys started to ride out as far as they could across the frozen surface of the lake. Approximately then metres from shore the ice collapsed under their weight and they were thrown into the water. Although one of them managed to grab onto the ice, the other, who did not know how to swim, had to struggle for some time to free a foot which was caught in his bicycle. Having seen what had happened, Serge Aumond and Stéphane Rainville rushed to help their friends. By working together they managed to haul the boy who was clinging to the ice from the water, then turned their attention to the other victim. They held out a coat to him which he was able to grasp. Then, while Serge held on to Stéphane to prevent him from falling into the water, Stéphane drew the boy towards them with the coat. After they succeeded in dragging him safely onto the ice as well, the two boys took their friends home.
