On October 10, 1995, Boyd Gavin risked his life to rescue a toddler from a burning house in his community of Beaches, near Hampden, White Bay, Newfoundland. Alerted by the cries of a child, Mr. Gavin rushed outside to find his neighbour's house ablaze. He ran towards the frightened two-year-old standing in the doorway, but the boy retreated inside before he could be reached. Guided by screams, Mr. Gavin crawled through the smoke until he felt the young victim's leg, but the child pulled away. Despite the flames, he persevered until he located the boy at the end of a hallway. With the child in his arms, Mr. Gavin felt his way out and ran to a neighbour's house for help. He then raced back inside the inferno in an attempt to save a baby, but the extreme heat and flames forced him to retreat. Overcome by smoke inhalation and severe burns, Mr. Gavin lost consciousness. Regrettably, the infant perished in the fire.
