Surjit Singh Madhopuri pursued an armed attacker whom he had just witnessed shooting a man on August 26, 1988, in Surrey, British Columbia. A newspaper salesman, Mr. Madhopuri had been engaged in a business conversation when his interlocutor excused himself and proceeded to leave the office. The man unexpectedly pulled a revolver from his jacket, repeatedly shot a nearby editor, and raced out of the building with Mr. Madhopuri in pursuit. Even while the assailant aimed the revolver at him, Mr. Madhopuri persisted in his chase and shouted to bystanders to stop the armed man. A passer-by intercepted the assailant and held him until the arrival of the police.
