On July 29, 1987, while vacationing at Long Beach, Vancouver Island, Richard Glenn Jordan saved two children from drowning when they were caught by a riptide and being pulled out to sea. Hearing the panicky screams of the children, Mr. Jordan waded into the water and began swimming towards them. Reaching the girl first he pushed her towards land until they were met by another man with an inner tube who took her to the shore. Mr. Jordan turned around to search for the little boy who had been carried further out. He finally reached the exhausted child and began helping him swim to the beach. Their progress was very slow due to the strength of the riptide but eventually they arrived on shore. After almost an hour in the cold water, Mr. Jordan collapse and was treated for hypothermia.
