Medal of Bravery
While playing on the golf course in Devon, Alberta, on March 19, 1988, eleven-year-old Joey Gelley and twelve-year-old Daniel MacPherson rescued a three-and-a-half-year-old girl who had fallen into the freezing waters of a large lagoon. Sliding on their stomachs over the weakening ice, they pulled the unconscious little girl out of the water and dragged her back along the ice to the shore where they drained the water from her mouth, stripped off her wet clothing and wrapped their own dry jackets around her. Daniel MacPherson ran to the club house for adult assistance and the hypothermic child was taken to hospital where she recovered from her ordeal.
