On June 27, 1990, in San Pedro de Lovago, Nicaragua, Capt. Ghyslain Bergeron, a Canadian Forces pilot, rescued a pilot from a burning helicopter. Following a ceremony marking the demobilization of resistance forces in Nicaragua, Capt. Bergeron witnessed a collision between two helicopters taking off. He immediately ran toward one of the helicopters with an extinguisher, but soon the aircraft was ablaze and explosions were heard. Spotting an airman trying to enter the cockpit, Capt. Bergeron realized that a pilot was trapped inside. He helped the aviator pull the victim out and moments later the helicopter was engulfed by flames and the ammunition on board exploded. Capt. Bergeron and his crew then flew the wounded to hospital.
