Sustaining personal injury herself and although suffering from a heart ailment, Irene Beaton succeeded in saving the life of her friend on July 4, 1989, at Pleasant Point, Ontario. A mentally unstable man had broken into his wife's cottage and was attacking her with a hunting knife when Mrs. Beaton ran to the broken cottage window and began yelling at the man. He suddenly stopped his attack and stormed out of the cottage, grabbed Mrs. Beaton and began stabbing her. When another woman intervened, the man released Mrs. Beaton who ran to the severely injured victim and led her to her house where they awaited the arrival of an ambulance.
