On January 9, 1992, Mr. Lowe rescued the driver of a burning gasoline tanker truck that was overturned on Highway 401, near Cornwall, Ontario. After witnessing the accident from the other side of the highway, he ran across the median toward a woman who had jumped out of the truck and was lying face down in the fuel-soaked snow. He pulled the victim away from the flaming tanker, which exploded moments later. Mr. Lowe went for help while another passer-by stayed with the injured woman.
