On March 10, 1989, Mr. Campbell saved a woman and child from a plane crash at Dryden, Ontario. Struck by flying debris, Mr. Campbell held up a burning luggage rack and protected the distraught woman and baby next to him from dripping, molten plastic. He opened the emergency door, extinguished the flames on their clothing, then pushed them out. He was trying to follow when both he and his seat were propelled backwards, further into the burning plane. Struggling free, almost overcome by smoke, he made his way to an opening in the fuselage and jumped out. Mr. Campbell then guided the woman and child a safe distance away as the plane was engulfed in flames.
