On September 16, 1991, Mr. Jack tried to save a couple whose boat had capsized on the Gordon River at Port Renfrew, British Columbia. Accompanied by a friend, he drove his motor boat through the rough waters to the scene. While he steadied the boat, the friend was able to reach over, grab the man and pull him on board. After the man told them his wife was trapped beneath the wreck, Mr. Jack, who had recently undergone heart surgery, jumped into the frigid water. He dove repeatedly, among debris and gas, but was unable to find the woman.
