Early in the morning on December 1, 1993, Mr. Janicki chased and subdued an armed man who had attacked a woman in Black Creek, British Columbia. While walking to the bus stop, Mr. Janicki heard muffled sounds from the ditch alongside the highway. Shining his flashlight down the embankment, he saw a man who immediately stood up and fled. Mr. Janicki found a woman lying in the ditch and, after being assured that she was alright, ran after the suspect, tackled him and knocked him to the ground. As they both got to their feet, the man began slashing at Mr. Janicki with a knife. Undaunted, Mr. Janicki lunged at him, again knocked him down and wrestled the knife from his hand. Mr. Janicki kept the man pinned to the ground for nearly twenty-five minutes, until police arrived.
