Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of the Commemoration of the Lac-Mégantic Tragedy

OTTAWA—One year ago today, the town of Lac-Mégantic was devastated by a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions.

In the weeks and months that followed, its citizens banded together to grieve, to cope, and to heal. The memories of those who perished still fresh in their minds, they have slowly begun the task of rebuilding their lives and restoring the place they have long called “home.”

As daunting as this task may seem, this town will rise again, from the solid foundation of resilience and compassion laid by its people. This is why today I am presenting the Commendation for Outstanding Service to the first responders and citizens of Lac-Mégantic and the surrounding communities, as a way of recognizing their extraordinary efforts and exceptional kindness and caring.

On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my renewed condolences and my hopes for a brighter future for all in Lac-Mégantic.
