Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case

Back to Photo Gallery
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presented the Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case to five laureates during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
During his speech, the Governor General said: "To achieve success, we need to work together, and to acknowledge and celebrate those who do so much in our communities for women’s rights. That is what we are doing here today. These five women are improving the lives of women in Canada and will continue to do so. With their dedication, I have no doubt that my granddaughters—all children, in fact—will grow up in a smarter, more caring nation, where we strive to ensure every avenue is open to them."
The Honourable Nicole Eaton, Senator, said a few words about the Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case before presenting each of the 2012 recipients.
The first laureate, Ms. Caroline Andrew, of Ottawa, Ontario, is a professor emeritus, director of the Centre on Governance, and former dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa.
Ms. Saara Bhanji (youth recipient), of Vancouver, British Columbia, is a passionate leader and tireless advocate for change in the lives of girls and young women.
Ms. Joanne Cave (youth recipient), of Edmonton, Alberta, is a proponent of equality for women and girls. She was named one of Alberta’s 50 most influential people.
Ms. Corinne Gallant, of Dieppe, New Brunswick, is a professor emeritus at the University of Moncton, an Acadian advocate and an icon in the Canadian women’s movement.
Ms. Régine Alende Tshombokongo, of Montréal, Quebec, is a dedicated community advocate who works tirelessly to improve the lives of immigrant women in Quebec.
Ms. Susan Truppe, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Status of Women, delivered remarks on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women.
