Imagine a Canada Initiative

June 19, 2017

Governor General to Honour Youth Participants
from Imagine a Canada Initiative

OTTAWA—His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will recognize the final 13 selections from the Imagine a Canada initiative at Rideau Hall on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. The works of each participant will be presented.

The Governor General, who was inducted as an honorary witness of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will be joined by two Indian Residential School survivors, Ms. Terri Brown and
Mr. Eugene Arcand, who is also a member of the Governing Circle of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) at the University of Manitoba. During the ceremony, the participants’ citations will be read by their respective provincial lieutenant governor, territorial commissioner or representative.

Earlier in the day, the selected participants and students from the region will have engaged in round-table discussions on defining meaningful involvement in the reconciliation process.

Organized by the NCTR, Imagine a Canada is a national art and communications initiative that asks young people to share their thoughts on what the future of Canada will look like through the lens of reconciliation. The initiative is open to students from kindergarten to grade 12, as well as to undergraduate students at the post-secondary level. Participants may submit works of art, poetry, film, video or traditional essays in this competition.

Media wishing to cover the ceremony are asked to confirm their attendance with the Rideau Hall Press Office and should arrive at the Princess Anne Entrance no later than 10:15 a.m. on the day of the event.
