Canada Day Celebrations
Ottawa, Ontario, Wednesday, July 1st, 2015
Isn’t it great that we’re all gathered under this maple leaf flag, created 50 years ago?!
Each of us, including our women and men in uniform, stands on guard for this flag!
I’ve met many people from coast to coast to coast who are giving back to this country!
In fact, just this morning we recognized 100 great Canadians by appointing them to the Order of Canada!
Another example of people helping out.
This is the Year of Sport in Canada, and that means volunteers across the country have been giving their time and their talents putting on some major sporting events.
Some are even international in scope, such as the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup!
Thousands of people are helping to put on these great sporting events—like thousands of stars shining brightly!
Now that’s what I call giving back!
Let me issue a challenge to all Canadians: let’s use our unique talents to build a better Canada—especially as we approach Canada’s 150th birthday.
It is going to be a very special year for our country.
And it’s just a year-and-a-half away!
2017 is a wonderful opportunity to reflect, take stock and imagine our future.
As we look back, let’s look forward, and let’s each give a gift to Canada—something that expresses our belief in a fair and just society for everyone who calls this land home!
Now is the time to put plans in motion; to turn ideas into action; to act.
Because the country we dream of won’t build itself.
The country we dream of is created by millions of acts that add up to something greater than the sum of their parts.
I think of Canada as a great performance, unfolding upon a grand stage like this one. In this performance, each of us has a role to play, and what better time to start acting than today, Canada Day?
Now is Canada’s time, and the time to give back is now!
Happy Canada Day!
