Presentation of Governor General’s Academic Medal
Wendake, Quebec, Wednesday, March 25, 2015
Thank you for extending such a warm welcome to my wife, Sharon, and me.
We are delighted to visit the home of the Huron-Wendat Nation.
This is such a dynamic community, and already I have been impressed by what I’ve seen here in Wendake.
This learning centre is a case in point.
This is where you come together to teach and to learn from one another.
You come here to learn new skills and to preserve time-honoured ones related to your culture and heritage.
Here you also find ways to celebrate and share your culture in new ways.
This is so very important. Education, culture, entrepreneurship: all come together under this roof.
I am pleased to have the chance to make a very special presentation this afternoon to a very special member of your community.
Ms. Shania Gasse has inspired many people with her commitment to learning.
To recognize her achievements, I would like to present her with the Governor General’s Academic Medal.
I am delighted to award this medal in person. As you may know, I have dedicated much of my life and career to learning.
Learning is so important. It can transform lives, and change the world.
Success stories like Shania’s are so important. They inspire us with a sense of possibility. They invite us to do better.
The same can be said of the community of Wendake itself, which is a beacon of success in Canada.
This community is a leader. It is one to watch, and so is Shania.
Thank you for your efforts, and congratulations on your achievements. You are helping to build a stronger Wendake, and I wish you very best.
