Governor General to Visit Boston and New York City

OTTAWA—At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will visit the cities of Boston and New York, in the United States of America, on May 28 and 29, 2013.

“The Canada-United States bilateral relationship is a model for the world, as it is founded on values of democracy, respect and rule of law,” said the Governor General. “I believe that this upcoming visit will reaffirm that no two other nations have ties as close as ours. I look forward to meeting and conversing with representatives from the business, financial and innovation sectors during my visit.”

His Excellency’s visit will begin on May 28, in Boston, Massachusetts, where he will receive an honorary membership in Harvard’s Phi Beta Kappa and deliver a keynote address to the New England-Canada Business Council and local business leaders. He will then visit the Boston Marathon memorial site to pay tribute to the victims of the bombings. Later that afternoon, he will attend a Fulbright Scholar Program discussion at Harvard University, at which time he will address guests and receive the inaugural Fulbright Canada Award for Outstanding Public Service.

On May 29, His Excellency will be in New York City to visit the NASDAQ MarketSite and speak on the diplomacy of knowledge, after which he will deliver a keynote address and participate in a panel discussion on urban innovation organized in partnership with the Center for Urban Planning Science and Progress, at New York University.

Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Membership Presentation
His Excellency will receive an honorary membership in the local Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Harvard University. By welcoming to its ranks the highest achievers in each graduating class, Phi Beta Kappa has recognized and promoted academic excellence at Harvard since 1779. Each year, an invitation is extended to a small number of alumni attending their class reunion as candidates for this honour, which recognizes lifelong service to the liberal arts and sciences. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of His Excellency’s graduation from Harvard University.

Address to the New England-Canada Business Council and other Business Leaders
His Excellency will deliver a keynote address to the New England-Canada Business Council and local business leaders. The New England-Canada Business Council works to advance the understanding of business, political and cultural issues between Canada and the United States, and to promote the entrepreneurial networking of its members. It is comprised of more than 275 members from New England and Eastern/Atlantic Canada, and organizes several annual conferences and networking activities to encourage cross-border business links.

Commemoration of the Boston Marathon Bombings
His Excellency, accompanied by Senator Stan Rosenberg, Massachusetts Senate Majority Leader, and Mr. Tom Grilk, Boston Athletic Association Executive Director, will lay flowers at the Boston Marathon memorial site in commemoration of the victims of the April 2013 bombings.

Fulbright Award Presentation and Panel Discussion
The Governor General will attend a Fulbright Scholar Program discussion at Harvard. He will address the guests and receive the inaugural Fulbright Canada Award for Outstanding Public Service. This award, established in the Fall of 2012,  recognizes individuals who have made a significant commitment to the public good, whose ideas and actions reflect the values and priorities of the late Senator J. William Fulbright, and whose leadership and accomplishments have resulted in significant benefits for the citizens of Canada, the United States and beyond. His Excellency will deliver remarks on the importance of learning, research and innovation to local dignitaries and representatives from private-sector innovation companies, and digital and traditional media. The address will be followed by a discussion and question period. His Excellency’s visit to MarketSite will conclude with a tour of the facilities.

Urban Innovation Luncheon and Panel Discussion in Partnership with the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) at New York University (NYU)
The Governor General will deliver a keynote address on the spirit of innovation and the diplomacy of knowledge. A panel discussion will follow the luncheon, moderated by Ms. Diane Brady, Senior Editor for Bloomberg Businessweek. The panellists will include: Dr. Steven Koonin, CUSP Director; Dr. Jane Snowdon, Senior Manager and Co-Lead for 2013 Global Technology Outlook at IBM; and Dr. Cheryl Misak, Vice-President and Provost of the University of Toronto.
