STATE VISIT TO GUATEMALA

At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will conduct a working visit to the United Mexican States, from November 30 to December 2; an official visit to Peru, from December 2 to 5; and a State visit to Guatemala, from December 5 to 7, 2012.

Round Table on Food Security and Nutrition
The Governor General will deliver opening remarks at a round table on food security and nutrition with government authorities, academics, donors, and representatives of private sector and civil society organizations. Following the discussion, His Excellency will visit an exhibition of projects supported by the Government of Canada on food security, nutrition and rural development.

Visit to Fundacion Ayúdame a Vivir, of the National Pediatric Oncology Unit (UNOP)
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will visit the facilities of the Fundación Ayúdame a Vivir, which raises funds and provides necessary resources for the operation, maintenance and growth of UNOP, Central America’s leader in the treatment of pediatric cancer. The foundation brings much-needed assistance and hope to children and families who are unable to pay for treatment. Its integral program includes the use of internationally approved treatments, intensive care, infection management, nutrition and palliative care, and supports the development of specialized activities in the psychosocial area. Additionally, it provides transportation and housing for families in need. 

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is supporting Ayúdame a Vivir this year with $20,000 towards its nutrition program, which will ensure patients receive healthy and appropriate meals during their treatment. For more information, visit ayuvi.org.gt/es.

Official Welcome with Military Honours and White Rose of Peace Ceremony
Their Excellencies will be officially welcomed to Guatemala by His Excellency Otto Pérez Molina, President of the Republic of Guatemala. The Governor General will receive military honours and will participate in the White Rose of Peace Ceremony before delivering remarks. The President will also deliver remarks. 

Since the signing of the Guatemalan peace accords in 1996, at 11:30 each morning, an army honour guard replaces the white rose on the monument, symbolizing 24 hours of peace. The rose that is removed is given to a guest of the country in a ceremony held in the courtyard. On special occasions, importan t dignitaries are asked to change the rose.

Their Excellencies will meet with President Pérez Molina to discuss Canada’s strong links with Guatemala, namely in the areas of justice, security and trade, as well as food security and nutrition. The Governor General will also sign Guatemala’s golden guest book.

Meeting with the Chief Justice of the Republic of Guatemala and Supreme Court Magistrates
His Excellency will meet with the Right Honourable Gabriel Antonio Medrano Valenzuela, Chief Justice of the Republic of Guatemala, and the newly elected Supreme Court magistrates to discuss the Canada’s ongoing engagement in helping to strengthen Guatemala’s systems of governance and rule of law.

Their Excellencies will attend a State luncheon hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Harold Caballeros in honour of their visit.

Visit to the Archivo Histórico de la Policía Nacional (AHPN)
Their Excellencies will visit the site where Guatemalan National Police Historical Archives, which numbered in the tens of millions of documents, were found and are now being classified and digitalized with the help of foreign countries. Following the visit, Their Excellencies will attend the unveiling of a sculpture on the Concord Plaza, outside the archives building.

Round-table Discussion with Canadian Business Leaders in Guatemala
The Governor General will deliver the opening remarks at a round-table discussion with members of the Canadian-Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce, and Guatemalan private sector and institutional representatives, on various themes including innovation and education; export and import opportunities; and the challenges and prospects for investors in Guatemala.
