Governor General to Undertake Visits to Mexico, Peru and Guatemala 

OTTAWA—At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will conduct a working visit to the United Mexican States, from November 30 to December 2; an official visit to Peru, from December 2 to 5; and a State visit to Guatemala, from December 5 to 7, 2012

Visit to Bombardier Aerospace Facilities
Accompanied by Mr. Laurent Beaudoin, Chairman of the Board of Bombardier, the Governor General will visit Bombardier Aerospace installations in the Querétaro Aerospace Park. The Querétaro manufacturing facility is responsible for the fabrication of the Learjet 85 aircraft’s major composite structures, including fuselage lay-up and sub-system installation; wiring harness fabrication and installation; wing assembly; and horizontal and vertical stabilizer assemblies. Visit to Puericultorio Perez Aranibar
Her Excellency Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit the orphanage Puericultorio Perez Aranibar, the biggest one in Peru. The centre provides housing, food, health education, recreation and comprehensive care to 300 children and adolescents. Her Excellency will meet with children and will discuss with teenagers about their reality and the education they receive. The orphanage was able to renovate its infirmary a few years ago with the help of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiative.

Visit to the Centro de Jóvenes y Empleo (Youth and Employment Centre) and Meeting with its Cuso Canadian volunteers, staff and beneficiaries
Their Excellencies will be greeted by His Worship Adolfo Ocampo Varga, Mayor of San Juan Miraflores. They will then meet with Cuso Canadian volunteers, staff and beneficiaries of a youth and employment centre to discuss the successes and challenges of a Canada-funded project at the centre and to learn about the context and economic realities of many Peruvian youth.

The Centro de Jóvenes y Empleo is supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through a Cuso project that aims to help disadvantaged youth between the ages of 15-29 develop vocational and entrepreneurial abilities and leadership skills.

Visit to SENCICO
His Excellency will visit SENCICO, a national training service for the construction industry that offers programs in geomatics. During the visit, Their Excellencies will learn how Canadian geomatics technology and knowledge was transferred to the Peruvian technical school through an alliance with the Cégep de Limoilou, in Québec, and with the support of CIDA via the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). A student who took part in an exchange program in Québec will conduct a demonstration of a computer program developed through a partnership with a private sector company. Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will visit the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú, an educational non-for-profit centre that serves individuals with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or developmental delays, as well as their families. It provides a comprehensive education system that includes programs designed to assist students throughout their lives. Visit to Fundacion Ayúdame a Vivir, of the National Pediatric Oncology Unit (UNOP)
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will visit the facilities of the Fundación Ayúdame a Vivir, which raises funds and provides necessary resources for the operation, maintenance and growth of UNOP, Central America’s leader in the treatment of pediatric cancer. The foundation brings much-needed assistance and hope to children and families who are unable to pay for treatment. Its integral program includes the use of internationally approved treatments, intensive care, infection management, nutrition and palliative care, and supports the development of specialized activities in the psychosocial area. Additionally, it provides transportation and housing for families in need. 

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is supporting Ayúdame a Vivir this year with $20,000 towards its nutrition program, which will ensure patients receive healthy and appropriate meals during their treatment. For more information, visit www.ayuvi.org.gt/es.

Official Welcome with Military Honours and White Rose of Peace Ceremony
Their Excellencies will be officially welcomed to Guatemala by His Excellency Otto Pérez Molina, President of the Republic of Guatemala. The Governor General will receive military honours and will participate in the White Rose of Peace Ceremony before delivering remarks. The President will also deliver remarks. 

Since the signing of the Guatemalan peace accords in 1996, at 11:30 each morning, an army honour guard replaces the white rose on the monument, symbolizing 24 hours of peace. The rose that is removed is given to a guest of the country in a ceremony held in the courtyard. On special occasions, important dignitaries are asked to change the rose.

The Governor General will deliver the opening remarks at a round-table discussion with members of the Canadian-Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce, and Guatemalan private sector and institutional representatives, on various themes including innovation and education; export and import opportunities; and the challenges and prospects for investors in Guatemala.
