Governor General to Attend the Opening Ceremony
of the London 2012 Olympic Games

OTTAWA—At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will attend the XXX Olympic Summer Games in London, England, from July 25 to 30, 2012.

“Sharon and I are honoured to represent Canada at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said His Excellency. “Our athletes personify a symbol of excellence in our nation and contribute to nurturing our sense of pride as Canadians. With their remarkable determination of becoming the best of the best, they inspire us to achieve our goals. As patron of the Canadian Olympic Committee, I invite you to join me in encouraging and cheering on our Canadian athletes as they are about to live their Olympic dream.”

While in London, Their Excellencies will meet with Canadian Olympic Team athletes and the President of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) Marcel Aubut at the Canadian Olympic Team Welcome Ceremony on July 25 and at the official opening of Canada Olympic House on July 27. Their Excellencies will also attend the Opening Ceremony on July 27 and cheer on our Canadian athletes competing on July 28 and 29.

In addition, the Governor General will participate in several networking meetings. At an event addressing Public-Private Partnerships–the Canadian Model, His Excellency will speak to senior representatives from foreign countries on the importance of working together across disciplines and borders; during a discussion hosted by the Canadian Olympic Foundation, he will address business leaders and philanthropists on the importance of supporting Canadian athletes in their quest for excellence; and he will deliver a speech on Canada’s achievements during an innovation luncheon with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette, research and development directors from major corporations, government officials, and senior representatives from universities in the United Kingdom.

Wednesday, July 25
London, England

6:35 p.m.
Presentation of Team Canada Athletes’ Podium Replica Jacket
Upon their arrival in the Olympic Village, and accompanied by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), and Mrs. Gosal, Their Excellencies will be welcomed by Marcel Aubut, President of the COC, who will present them with a Team Canada Athletes’ Podium Replica Jackets.

Canadian Olympic Team Welcome Ceremony
Their Excellencies, accompanied by the Minister of State and Mrs. Gosal, will be welcomed by Mark Tewksbury, Canadian Chef de Mission, and Sylvie Bernier, Deputy Chef de Mission. They will attend the official raising of the Canadian flag and meet with Canadian athletes.

Canadian Olympic Committee Official Opening Ceremony of Canada Olympic House
TheirExcellencies will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of Canada Olympic House. They will be joined by the Minister of State and Mrs. Gosal, Gordon Campbell, High Commissioner for Canada, and Marcel Aubut, President of the COC. They will also visit the facility and view the digital totem on display. His Excellency will have the opportunity to address families and friends of our Canadian athletes, representatives of national sports federations, and COC executive members.

During a networking meeting hosted by the High Commissioner of Canada, His Excellency will deliver a speech to visiting senior representatives of countries attending the Olympic Games on the importance of working together across disciplines and borders. He will also highlight the ability of the Canadian Public-Private Partnerships model to enhance innovation and to deliver higher quality infrastructure.

As patron of the Canadian Olympic Committee, His Excellency will attend a discussion hosted by the Canadian Olympic Foundation on how to better support our Canadian elite athletes, the future of our national sports system, and the Foundation’s vision. The Governor General will address business leaders and philanthropists on the spirit of excellence, fairness and friendly competition that infuses the Olympic Games, as well as on the importance of supporting Canadian athletes in their quest for excellence.

Monday, July 30

Canada – Your Partner in Innovation Luncheon
His Excellency and Canadian astronaut Julie Payette will be guest speakers at this innovation luncheon which will bring together research and development directors from major corporations, senior representatives of some of the United Kingdom’s universities, and select government officials.

His Excellency will deliver a speech on Canadian achievements in science and technology both past and present. He will showcase Canada as a country of innovation, and call on innovators everywhere to dedicate their efforts to building a smarter, more caring world. He will then participate in a question period with the audience.
