Governor General of Canada Welcomes
His Excellency Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel
OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will welcome His Excellency Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel at Rideau Hall from May 6 to 8, 2012, on the occasion of his State visit to Canada.
“I look forward to welcoming President Peres to Canada. He has played an eminent role in the history of the State of Israel. I will take this special opportunity to discuss with him how we can strengthen research and educational collaboration between our countries,” said the Governor General.

9:30 a.m. – Official Welcoming Ceremony
An official welcoming ceremony, with military honours, will be held at Rideau Hall. The President of the State of Israel will conduct an inspection of a guard of honour. The Governor General and the President will then offer remarks.

10 a.m. –Discussion on Education and Innovation
The Governor General, joined by the President of the State of Israel, will host a discussion on education and innovation for the purpose of promoting greater collaboration and synergy between Canada and Israel. Participants will include experts from universities and organizations interested in furthering the convergence of education and innovation.

11:30 a.m. – Signature Ceremony for Memorandum of Understanding
The Governor General and the President will witness the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Royal Society of Canada and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

11:45 a.m. – Ceremonial Tree Planting
The President will plant a tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall to commemorate his State visit to Canada. The tree will be an Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobes), which is called the ‘Tree of Peace’ by the Iroquois.

Note that events taking place at Rideau Hall during the State visit are not open to the public and that the grounds will be closed to the public on May 7 and 8.
