Governor General to Honour the 2011 Literary Award Laureates
and Celebrate 75 Years of this Prestigious Award


OTTAWA—His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, accompanied by his wife, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, will present the 2011 Governor General’s Literary Awards during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at 6 p.m.

Former governors general the Right Honourable Edward Schreyer accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Lily Schreyer, and the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson will attend the Governor General’s Literary Awards ceremony. Also in attendance will be Mrs. Gerda Hnatyshyn, spouse of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn; Mrs. Diane Fowler LeBlanc, spouse of the late Right Honourable Roméo LeBlanc; and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond, spouse of the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.

To mark this milestone occasion, a new temporary exhibition will be launched the same day in honour of the 75th anniversary of the Governor General’s Literary Awards.

Opening of a New Exhibition Showcasing 75 Years of “GGreat” Books
To mark the 75th anniversary of the Governor General’s Literary Awards, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General will present a new exhibition called 75 years of “GGreat” Books: Governor General’s Literary Awards, showcasing the more than 600 works that have won the award since 1936. The temporary exhibition will give Canadians up close access to the entire Literary Award-winning collection that resides at Rideau Hall. Visitors will be inspired by these works that continue to resonate with Canadians, as we look forward to new classics to come. At the end of the presentation, the Governor General will say a few words.

OPEN TO MEDIA - Prior to the awards ceremony in the Ball Room, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General will host the media in the Ambassador’s Room where they can learn more about the new temporary exhibition.

Starting November 25, 2011, the public can visit this exhibition as part of a guided tour of the residence. Please call 1-866-842-4422 to make your reservation.

His Excellency will honour the laureates of the 75th edition of the Governor General’s Literary Awards, in the English and French categories of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction, children’s literature (text and illustration) and translation.

About the Governor General’s Literary Awards
The Governor General’s Literary Awards, administered by the Canada Council for the Arts, are Canada’s oldest and most prestigious awards for English- and French-language Canadian literature. In addition to the monetary award, each laureate receives a specially-bound copy of the winning book, created by Montreal book-binder Lise Dubois. The names of this year’s laureates are available on the Canada Council for the Arts website at www.canadacouncil.ca.
