Governor General to Attend the Pan American Games in Guadalajara

OTTAWA—At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will attend the XVI Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, on October 29 and 30, 2011. On this occasion, he will support Canadian athletes by attending the finals and participating in the closing ceremony.

“I’m pleased to be visiting Mexico and what an honour it is to attend the Pan American Games, where I will have the opportunity to see our top Canadian athletes compete against the best athletes in the Americas,” said the Governor General. “Their determination and commitment inspire us to excellence and to live a healthy and active lifestyle. As Canada prepares to host the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, I thank everyone involved in making it happen, particularly all the volunteers whose dedicated work will contribute to the success of the Games.”

The Pan American Games are an important event for the development of Canadian athletes, providing valuable training and competition experience. The competition brings Canadian athletes together with other high-calibre athletes in the common pursuit of sports excellence. The Pan American Games in Toronto will take place from July 10 to 26, 2015. The Parapan American Games will take place from August 7 to 14, 2015.

Arrival in Guadalajara
Upon his arrival in the city, His Excellency will receive a Canadian athlete’s jacket presented by Mr. Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), in the presence of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport).

2:30 p.m.
Equestrian Individual Jumping Final
His Excellency will attend the Equestrian Individual Jumpingfinal.Guadalajara Country Club, Guadalajara, Mexico

5 p.m.
Medal Presentation Ceremony at Field Hockey
His Excellency will attend the men’s Field Hockey gold medal game as Canada takes on Argentina. He will also participate in the medal presentation ceremony at 7:10 p.m.

8 p.m. 
Province of Ontario Sports Leaders Reception
During this reception, His Excellency will address COC members, Canadian sports leaders, Pan American Sports Organization officials, as well as Canadian and international athletes.

Tour of the Athletes’ Village
During his visit to the Athletes’ Village, His Excellency will meet with Mr. Nick Van der Kaaij, Village Mayor, and will tour the international zone and the team welcome area.

11 a.m.
Meeting with Team Canada Officials and Tour of Canadian Team Residence
The Governor General, joined by Mr. Jacques Cardyn, Chef de Mission of Team Canada, and Mr. Curt Harnett, Assistant Chef, will visit the Canadian Team Residence, where he will  have the opportunity to interact with Team Canada athletes and congratulate volunteers on their indispensable work at the Games.

12 p.m.
Lunch with Team Canada Athletes
His Excellency will have lunch with Team Canada athletes in the village’s main dining hall to congratulate them on their great performances and success at these Games.

Medal Presentation Ceremony at Rugby Seven’s Finals
His Excellency will attend the men’s Rugby Seven’s gold and bronze medal games and will participate in the medal presentation ceremony at 3:40 p.m.

8 p.m.
Closing Ceremony
His Excellency will attend the closing ceremony of the XVI Pan American Games and will witness the handover of the Games’ flag to Toronto officials, as the city will host the Games in 2015.
