Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of His One Year Installation Anniversary
OTTAWA—Sharon and I have always been struck by the beauty and diversity of our vast country, from the time we spent in Sault Ste. Marie in our early years, through the years spent in Kingston, Toronto, Montréal and Waterloo. We, like many of you, derive a great sense of pride from our country’s great success and achievements, both here at home and abroad.
In the first year since my installation as governor general of Canada, on October 1, 2010, my love of our country has amplified. Over the past months, I have witnessed, first-hand, the great compassion and spirit of co-operation of Canadians. As commander-in-chief of Canada, I have been impressed by the dedication to service and touched by the sacrifices made by our Canadian Forces members.
In my installation speech, I spoke of us working together to create a smarter, more caring nation. And through this journey, I have learned that this goal is achievable if we weave our innate Canadian altruism and ingenuity with caring for our neighbours, our communities and our country, in increasingly smart ways.
As we look forward to Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, I hope that we can bolster volunteerism and philanthropy, support our families and continue to innovate so that every Canadian will know success and have cause for celebration when we hit this important milestone in our country’s history.
Sharon and I want to thank you for welcoming us into your homes, your communities and your lives. It is a great honour and an immense privilege to serve as governor general of Canada.
Let’s continue together on this journey towards a smart and caring nation.
