Governor General to open
the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games
 

OTTAWA—Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will be in Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 12, 2010, to open the X Paralympic Winter Games. 

The Governor General will take great pride in attending the Opening Ceremony and declaring the Paralympic Games open: 

“The spotlight is now on the Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games, which will keep burning the flame that has been lit in our hearts since the Olympic Games began,” said the Governor General. “We will have the opportunity to see in action athletes from around the world who, through their tenacity, sacrifice, courage and passion, will dazzle us with their athletic achievements. These Games are also an opportunity to celebrate excellence and reach new heights of solidarity.”

Friday, March 12

12:30 p.m.
Lunch and discussion with Canadian Paralympic athletes
A few hours before the official opening of the Games, the Governor General will meet with athletes from the Canadian Paralympic Sledge Hockey Team and the Canadian Paralympic Curling Team. She will have lunch with them and then engage into in discussion on the importance of inclusion and striving for excellence within the Paralympic Games.

Presentation of board members of the International Paralympic Committee
Her Excellency along with the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, will officially welcome Honorary and Governing Board Members of the International Paralympic Committee to Canada.  In front of lieutenant-governors and territorial commissioners of Canada, dignitaries and distinguished guests, the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the President of the International Paralympic Committee, Sir Philip Craven, will make brief remarks. A reception will follow.

Following the reception, the Governor General, the Prime Minister and Mr. Sam Sullivan, Canada’s Paralympic Ambassador for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, will meet.

The Governor General will attend the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, where she will declare the Games open.

Dinner hosted by the International Paralympic Committee
At the invitation of the President of the International Paralympic Committee, Sir Philip Craven, the Governor General will attend a dinner with members of the Committee.
