Symbolism

The white and blue stripes are taken from the arms of Ahun, France, the township where Mr. Margot's family has lived since the 16th century. The brick motif recalls his many ancestors who were masons, a trade still followed by some members of his family today. Red pays homage to the many Margots who have fought to defend France. Resembling a curtain that is being lifted to unveil a treasure, the red section also expresses Mr. Margot’s love for his native town and his desire to protect its cultural and artistic heritage. Finally, the white disc represents a whole note as well as a pearl, the former symbolizing Mr. Margot’s career in teaching musical theory; the latter a reference to the name Margot, which comes from the name of the parish of Sainte-Marguerite in Cressat, France, Margaret meaning “pearl” in Latin and Greek.
