Their Excellencies to Welcome Team Canada
Invictus Games Athletes to Rideau Hall

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will welcome Team Canada athletes who will be competing in the Toronto 2017 Invictus Games. The event will take place at Rideau Hall on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.

“These athletes are living proof that you can overcome adversity with resilience, determination, courage and belief,” His Excellency said. “Training for the Invictus Games has shown itself to be extremely beneficial to recovery from physical wounds and mental health injury or illness. Sharon and I are honoured to welcome Team Canada to Rideau Hall. I very much look forward to officially opening the Games in Toronto and to cheering on our outstanding Canadian athletes.”

Their Excellencies will meet with the 90 athletes comprised of Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans from all three environmental commands (Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force). His Excellency will deliver remarks on this occasion.

About the Invictus Games
Following a visit in 2013 to the U.S.-based Warrior Games for wounded, ill and injured military personnel and veterans, His Royal Highness Prince Harry was inspired to create an expanded international version. The inaugural Invictus Games took place in London in the fall of 2014 and attracted more than 400 competitors from 13 countries. The Games, which demonstrate soldiers’ and veterans’ endless drive to overcome and the power of sport on their journey to recovery, will be held from September 23 to 30, 2017, in Toronto.  For more information, visit
