Governor General Arbour delivered remarks at the unveiling of the national 2SLBGTQI+ monument, known as Thunderhead, in Ottawa.
Inspired by the image of a thunderhead cloud, the 11-metre structure and public space acknowledge thousands of 2SLBGTQI+ people in the Canadian military, RCMP and federal civil service who, from the 1950s to the 1990s, saw their careers hindered or terminated because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
This monument testifies the determination of all the people who have had
the courage to speak out against discrimination and injustice.
