Visit to the Netherlands and Poland

At the request of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, travels to the Netherlands and Poland, from August 30 to September 2, 2019.

The Governor General visits the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), where she is presented with a commemorative plaque.

The Governor General meets with Prime Minister Mark Rutte. During the meeting, the Prime Minister presents a tulip bulb to Don White, a Canadian veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Italy and Holland.

August 31, 2019

The Governor General delivers remarks at the official ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Scheldt, where Canadian soldiers helped the Allies win control of the Dutch and Belgian shores of the strategic Scheldt River.

The Governor General also presents three Sovereign’s Medals for Volunteers and a Meritorious Service Decoration to four Dutch recipients. In the evening, she visits the Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery.

September 1, 2019

The Governor General attends the official ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. The ceremony takes place at Pilsudski Square, where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located.

She then attends an official dinner hosted by His Excellency Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland, with other foreign dignitaries.

September 2, 2019

The Governor General visits the Embassy of Canada to Poland and presents a Meritorious Service Decoration to a serving member of the Polish army. She also visits AstroCeNT, an interdisciplinary international research centre collaborating through the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration, including Canada through the McDonald Institute.
