Visit to Italy

November 29 to December 4, 2019

As Commander-in-Chief of Canada, the Governor General participated in commemorative events hosted by the Government of Canada on the occasion of the Italian Campaign commemorations.

November 30, 2019

The Governor General travelled to Pontecorvo, Aquino and Cassino to take part in commemorative ceremonies.

December 2, 2019

The visit also showcased the dynamism of present-day Italy-Canada relations, including the fields of scientific research and investments in science, technology and innovation.  Namely, the Governor General met with His Excellency Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic.

In addition to accompanying veterans and the ministerial delegation to some of the commemorations, and meeting with the Italian President, Her Excellency participated in a discussion on science and space with Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

December 3, 2019

In Villanova, the Governor General visited the Villanova Canadian War Cemetery.

Her Excellency also presented a Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers.

December 4, 2019

In Ravenna, the Governor General participated in two commemorative ceremonies: one in the Town Square and the other in the Ravenna War Cemetery.
