Governor General Julie Payette hosted the presentation ceremony of the Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism and the Michener-Deacon Fellowships for Investigative Journalism at Rideau Hall.
The ceremony was preceded by a panel discussion on investigative journalism in Canada.

Corbett Hencey received the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism for a two-part project examining the federal government’s decision to let Canadian defence contractors sell weapons to Ukraine to fight Russian-backed rebels in the country’s restive east. Hancey’s project will examine how the controversial sale was approved, and also what Ukraine’s
government and activists there are doing to fight corruption.

Greg Mercer received the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism for a proposal to examine the hidden problem of occupational disease in Canada. Mercer’s project will promote better understanding of why the situation is so under-reported and its victims rarely compensated. It is estimated that at least 8,000 people die in Canada each year from workplace diseases, and many thousands more experience pain and suffering each year as a result of where they work.

The Telegraph-Journal has won the 2018 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism for its 18-month series Sounding the Alarm. The Saint John newspaper discovered a critical shortage of paramedics was forcing New Brunswick’s ambulances to sit idle and unstaffed. It was an issue with life-and-death consequences: at least one person died.
