Governor General Julie Payette undertook an official visit to Newfoundland and Labrador on September 20 and 21, 2018. She stopped in St. John’s, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and North West River.

Upon arrival, the Governor General received military honours, including a guard of honour, the “Viceregal Salute” and a 21-gun salute from members of the 5th Canadian Division, the Naval Reserve, Air Reserve Flight Torbay, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and 5thCanadian Ranger Patrol Group. Later that day, she invited members of the public to join her for a hike at Signal Hill as part of her new initiative called GGActive, which aims to promote health and fitness.

The Governor General learned about Labrador’s rich Indigenous history through the exhibits on display at the Labrador Interpretation Centre. While visiting Canadian Armed Forces personnel at 5 Wing Goose Bay, she participated in a familiarization flight on board a CH-146 Griffon helicopter.
