Cheer on Half-Marathon Participants at Rideau Hall
OTTAWA—As patrons of Canada Army Run, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will attend the 7th edition of the event on Sunday, September 21, 2014, in Ottawa. The run will start at the intersection of Elgin Street and Laurier Avenue.
For the first time this year, Rideau Hall, the official residence and workplace of the Governor General, will be part of the half-marathon course and will host a cheering area for members of the public. These exciting additions will further enhance the experience of participants coming from across Canada and around the world.
“Sharon and I are delighted to extend our greetings and offer our encouragement to all those taking part in Canada Army Run in support of Soldier On and the Military Families Fund,” said His Excellency. “We are thrilled this year to extend an invitation to the public to join us on-site at Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada, to cheer on half-marathon participants as they make their way through the grounds. Their determination in putting their minds, bodies and souls through such a physical and demanding challenge for a great cause is truly inspiring. They deserve our utmost encouragement.”
At 7:15 a.m., Their Excellencies will meet with ill and injured soldiers and other disabled athletes participating in Canada Army Run in downtown Ottawa. At 7:25 a.m., His Excellency will address athletes competing in the five-kilometre run. At 9 a.m., the Governor General will also speak to athletes competing in the half-marathon.
At 9:40 a.m., Their Excellencies will be at Rideau Hall to cheer on half-marathon participants as they run, walk or roll through the 13-kilometre marker.
