Governor General to Celebrate Members of the Canadian Forces and Veterans in Kitchener and Meet with Caring Community Members in Stratford

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will be in Kitchener on Sunday, May 29, 2011, and will visit the City of Stratford on Monday, May 30, 2011.

During this visit, Their Excellencies will be in Kitchener to take part in the “Celebrate Me Home” Weekend, organized by the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada. Their Excellencies will attend the musical tribute honouring members of the Canadian Forces throughout Waterloo Region who served in Afghanistan, as well as the sacrifices made by their families. In addition, the tribute will recognize veterans who served in the Second World War, in Korea and in UN peacekeeping missions. A highlight of the musical tribute will be the Governor General’s official unveiling of the Kin Canada mural, Portraits of Honour.

The following day, Their Excellencies will visit the City of Stratford where they will meet with the Mayor, His Worship Dan Mathieson, and with community members. As part of this visit, Their Excellencies will have the opportunity to look at how the community supports its philanthropic organizations and volunteers. Their Excellencies will conclude their visit at the opening night of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 59th season, which will feature a performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Performance of “Marching Home: a Musical Tribute to our Veterans”
Their Excellencies will attend a musical tribute to honour members of both Regular and Reserve Armed Forces throughout Waterloo Region. Following the musical tribute, the Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada will participate in the unveiling of the Portrait of Honour mural and offer remarks. The hand-painted mural by Cambridge artist David Sopha includes a portrait of every Canadian soldier who died as a result of his or her service in Afghanistan. In early June, the mural is scheduled to embark on a cross-Canada tour with stops in the hometowns of each of the 155 fallen soldiers. For more information about the “Marching Home” musical tribute, visit

Upon their arrival at City Hall, Their Excellencies will be greeted by Grade 6 students from the Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School. They will then sign the City’s official guestbook prior to meeting with the Mayor.

Visit to the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus
His Excellency will take part in a tour of the new campus currently under construction. The University of Waterloo Stratford Campus will open its doors to students in 2012. This unique project is bringing a combination of business, technology and creativity together. It is expected that this campus will serve as a new model for education in Canada.

Lunch with Students from Stratford Northwestern Secondary School at the Screaming Avocado Café
Their Excellencies will join students for lunch at the Screaming Avocado Café, a part of the school’s culinary arts program. The Screaming Avocado offers its patrons healthy and delicious daily lunches prepared by students using locally sourced ingredients from farmers, producers and the students’ own gardens. The goal is to introduce youth to “good, clean and fair local food, and develop their ability to prepare healthy meals from scratch.” For additional information, visit

Panel Discussion on Volunteerism and Community Development in Stratford
Their Excellencies will take part in a discussion with key panellists on the difference volunteers and philanthropy make in the development of a modern community.

Red Carpet Arrival at the Opening Night of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 59th Season
Their Excellencies will arrive on the red carpet for the season-opening performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is an internationally recognized annual celebration of theatre running from April to November. Many notable Canadian, British and American actors have played in roles at the Stratford Festival. It was one of the first—and still one of the most—prominent arts festivals in Canada, and is recognized worldwide for its productions of Shakespearean plays. For additional information, visit
