Governor General to Undertake Official Visit to Alberta

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will undertake an official visit to Alberta from November 28 to 30, 2010.

Their Excellencies will begin their official visit in the city of Edmonton, where they will attend the 98th Grey Cup Championship.

“It is with great enthusiasm that my wife and I will attend the CFL Championship Game to cheer on two outstanding football teams,” said His Excellency David Johnston. “As a sports fan and as a true believer in the importance of physical activity, I am looking forward to sharing this unique experience with Canadians and I am more than honoured to present the Grey Cup to this year’s champions.”

During their visit, Their Excellencies will meet with the Lieutenant Governor and the Premier of the province, as well as the mayors of the cities of Edmonton and Calgary. They will also participate in a variety of official functions and ceremonies, and meet with many Albertans, including teachers, students, Canadian Forces members, veterans, volunteers, and representatives of the health sector and various community associations.

98th Grey Cup Championship
Upon their arrival at the Commonwealth Stadium, Their Excellencies will be greeted by representatives of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Also in attendance will be Their Honours the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, and Mrs. Linda May Ethell, as well as the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta.  Accompanied by CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon, His Excellency will present the Grey Cup trophy to the winning team of the 98th Grey Cup Championship.

In 1909, Governor General Earl Grey donated a trophy for the Rugby Football Championship of Canada. The trophy, which subsequently became known as the Grey Cup, was originally open only to teams that were registered with the Canada Rugby Union. Since 1954, only the teams of the CFL have participated in the challenge for the Grey Cup.

Visit to St. Mary Professional Learning School
Their Excellencies will visit the St. Mary Professional Learning School, which initiated an innovative pilot project in 2009.  The school uses video games and video boards in classrooms to educate students from Grades 2 to 6. During their visit, Their Excellencies will meet with students and learn more about the technologies developed and implemented to provide the students with better learning methods.

Official Welcoming Ceremony
Their Excellencies will be greeted by the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta.  The Governor General will receive military honours, which will include the “Viceregal Salute” and the inspection of the guard of honour.  Their Excellencies will also be greeted by Their Honours the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, and Mrs. Linda May Ethell.

Their Excellencies will meet with the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta, and Mrs. Marie Stelmach. Their Excellencies will then attend a luncheon, during which the Premier will announce two scholarships, named in honour of the Governor General, for students attending the universities of Alberta and Calgary. His Excellency will deliver an address on this occasion.

Presentation of the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation to the 1st Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Battle Group
His Excellency will deliver a speech and present the scroll and pennant of the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendationto the 1st Battalion of the PPCLI Battle Group. The Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation was created on July 3, 2002, to recognize outstanding service by units of the Canadian Forces in extremely hazardous circumstances in an active theatre of operations. Visit to the Calgary Poppy Fund Veteran’s Food Bank
During a visit to the Calgary Poppy Fund Headquarters, His Excellency will have the opportunity to meet with and speak to veterans about the personal challenges they have faced following their years of military service. The Governor General will help pack a food hamper going to veterans.

The Calgary Poppy Fund Veteran’s Food Bank assists veterans, their widows and dependents in obtaining medical and dental care, shelter and food.

Her Excellency Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit the Galt Hospital 100 Years exhibition at the Galt Museum & Archives.

Meeting with His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary
Upon his arrival at City Hall, His Excellency will meet with His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary. His Excellency will then head over to City Hall School, where the Mayor will present the Governor General with a White Hat and invite him to sign the guest registry. The visit to City Hall will conclude with a meeting with council members and the Administrative Leadership Team.

Visit to the Federation of Calgary Communities
His Excellency will meet with members of the Federation of Calgary Communities to discuss the benefits of philanthropy and the importance of building a smart, caring nation. He will also listen to the members’ success stories and hear about the different volunteer models they have implemented within the city of Calgary. The Governor General will receive a “Community Hero” volunteer award for his efforts to encourage philanthropy and volunteerism as one of his mandate’s pillars.

The Federation of Calgary Communities improves neighbourhood life in Calgary by providing services and programs that create, support and sustain vital and representative community associations.  Through its 146 member groups, the Federation is collectively the largest voluntary organization in Calgary, engaging the efforts of over 20 000 volunteers annually.

Visit to Lethbridge HIV Connection Society
Her Excellency will visit the facility and meet with its staff members, who provide support services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C, and who promote the prevention of HIV and Hepatitis C transmission.

The Lethbridge HIV Connection Society is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization that provides leadership in building individual and community capacity to respond to and reduce the harm associated with HIV and Hepatitis C in southwestern Alberta. It also promotes positive education strategies to inform the public about HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, and to encourage public understanding of persons living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.
