Back to Photo Gallery
Their Excellencies presented the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards (GGPAA) during a ceremony at Rideau Hall. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards.
During his remarks, at the beginning of the ceremony, the Governor General said: "Each of you, the recipients of this year’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards, has devoted your life to provoking our emotions and stimulating our minds through performance. You have engaged creatively with our changing world, and you have shared the results through theatre, dance, film, broadcasting and music. Your creativity, passion, humour and generosity have entertained and inspired audiences and artists here in Canada and around the world. Your work spans generations and transcends borders, and you have contributed to Canada’s sense of itself as an arts nation at home in the world."
Ms. Janina Fialkowska, concert pianist, received the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award.
Mr. Paul-André Fortier, dancer, choreographer, teacher and artistic director, received the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award.

Ms. Earlaine Collins received the 2012 Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts. This award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual or group in voluntary service to the performing arts in Canada. Recipients of this award are also nominated by the general public.
Mr. Des McAnuff, director, writer, composer and artistic director, received the 2012 National Arts Centre Award. This award recognizes the work of an extraordinary nature by an individual artist or company in the past performance year.
Recipients of the National Arts Centre Award are selected by the NAC Board of Trustees from a list of candidates proposed by a nominating committee of NAC artistic programmers.
Created in 1992, under the auspices of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, the GGPAA are presented each year to Canadian performers whose extraordinary lifetime achievements have contributed significantly to the enrichment of Canada’s cultural life.
