Working Visit to Barbados - Day 2

Their Excellencies and selected members of the Canadian delegation met with the Honourable Elliott Belgrave, Acting Governor-General of Barbados.
The courtesy call took place on the second day of Their Excellencies' working visit to Barbados.
Governor General Johnston and acting Governor-General Belgrave discussed stronger business, security and educational linkages between the two Commonwealth countries.
The courtesy call took place at Government House, in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Their Excellencies and selected members of the Canadian delegation met with the Honourable Freundel Stuart, Prime Minister of Barbados.
The exchanges during this working visit provided greater visibility for co-operation initiatives in various sectors, particularly in strategies promoting education and economic development.
The meeting with the Prime Minister of Barbados took place at Ilaro, in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The Governor General and the Canadian delegation attended a networking lunch with government officials, as well as with Canadian and Barbadian representatives from the business, cultural and academic communities.
Ms. Ruth Archibald, High Commissioner of Canada, delivered a speech on that occasion. During the event, the guests engaged in an exchange on our two countries’ close bilateral relationship through the Commonwealth, the United Nations and the Organization of American State.
The Governor General proposed a toast in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The Governor General visited Barbados Community College where he delivered a speech to students, academics and Canadian institutions’ alumni on Canada’s and Barbados’ education partnerships.
"There are strong and long-standing ties of learning between our two countries. Canadian scholarships have opened the door for many Barbadians to higher education over the past few decades, and graduates of Canadian schools are now working in many professions across the Caribbean."
A panel discussion on the topic of the importance of colleges in contributing to employability and economic prosperity with Canadian delegates and Barbadian counterparts followed His Excellency's speech. Canadian delegate Karen McBride was among the participants.
Canadian delegate James Knight also took part in the discussion.
The Minister of Education of Barbados, Ronald Jones, delivered remarks.
Their Excellencies and the Canadian delegation visited the Historic Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and met with members of the Barbados Defence Force, as well as with government and private sector officials.
The Governor General delivered remarks on the long historical ties between Canada and Barbados and on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
