The Governor General delivered the opening address of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE).
The CAIE aims to promote an inter-American exchange space for leaders of higher education institutions, namely to discuss priority issues concerning the internationalization of higher education, as well as its quality management.
“We must study together—face-to-face. Research together. Travel together. Socialize together. Talk informally together. Only then can we unleash the true power of the diplomacy of knowledge.”
His Excellency is leading a delegation of 30 university presidents of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). He is seen in with Karen McBride (left), president and CEO of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).
Her Excellency visited the Espaço Criança Esperença, a UNESCO-supported charitable organization located in the communities of Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinhom (three favelas located in Copacabana and Ipanema). She planted a tree in the "green" zone.
Mrs. Johnston had the opportunity to meet with children and artists who use the centre as she toured the professional training centres, the library, the computer room, the indoor soccer facility and the outdoor swimming pool.
She brought books to give to the children.
The Governor General attended the the AUCC Canada-Brazil University Presidents’ Round Table with delegates, including the Honourable Gary Goodyear (left of the Governor General), Minister of State (Science and Technology), and Mr. Jamal A. Khokhar (left of Minister Goodyear), Ambassador of Canada to the Federative State of Brazil.
When he addressed the AUCC Canada-Brazil University Presidents’ Round Table participants, the Governor General focussed on the importance of partnerships and the internationalization of education to attain a global and interconnected world.
Following his address, the Governor General visited CAIE’s Imagine Education in Canada booth where he spoke to Brazilian students who studied in Canada.
Upon their arrival in São Paulo, Their Excellencies were welcomed by government officials.
The Governor General delivered a keynote address on “Brazil-Canada Partnerships and Enhancing the Innovation Ecosystem” to researchers, professors, administrators and students at the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).
A panel discussion on the topic of “Brazil-Canada: Capabilities and Current Opportunities for Institutional Collaboration” and a question period with Canadian delegates and Brazilian counterparts followed His Excellency's address.
