Visit to Hamilton and Toronto

Back to Photo Gallery
The Governor General went to Hamilton, in Ontario, during the 2012 National Volunteer Week.
Hamilton citizens of all ages welcomed His Excellency.
His Excellency met with citizens and local leaders of Hamilton to discuss the partnerships and long-term work that could improve the overall quality of life in their neighbourhood.
This event was organized in collaboration with the Hamilton Community Foundation. It facilitates philanthropy and helps donors to give back in a way that has meaning to them; it supports all aspects of community life by giving grants to the widest possible range of charitable organizations and initiatives; and it fosters community leadership by bringing together people, knowledge and resources to stimulate new ideas, address issues and strengthen Hamilton.
The Governor General delivered the keynote address at the Carolyn A. Milne Leadership Forum. "Hamilton is home to caring and giving people who see the importance of strengthening the community for today and for our children’s future. You have transformed your city for the better. You are able to attract compassionate people because you are compassionate yourselves in all you do. The innovative ideas that will be vital in the years to come will come from community organizations like yours."
In the afternoon, the Governor General presented The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold level to youth from across Canada. The event took place at Toronto Police College.
His Excellency delivered remarks to underline the participants’ various achievements within their respective communities. “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the talent and determination of youth. The youth of this country are a vital source of ideas, renewal and optimism for our society. Seeing you here today and hearing of your accomplishments, I know that our confidence is well-placed.”
The Governor General met with some recipients following the ceremony.
