The Basilica is nearby the place where it is said Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in front of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin.
The Basilica is part of the Historic Centre of Mexico City, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. Visitors from around the world go to the basilica to admire the relic.
The Basilica is the most visited Catholic monument after the Vatican. Their Excellencies here with Msgr. Diego Monroy Ponce, the First Lady of Mexico Mrs. Margarita Zavala de Calderón, and the Minister of State Foreign Affairs (Americas), Peter Kent, a member of the official delegation for the State visits to Mexico and Guatemala.
