Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond met with Canadian delegates that will accompany them on State visits to Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. During the briefing, delegates heard from representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada on the countries to be visited.
Mr.Carlos Ferrand, screenwriter, film director and director of photography, is part of the accompanying delegation. Most recently he directed The Magic Touch, a film about an extraordinary artist, Dominique Lemieux, the designer of many of the Cirque du Soleil costumes. In 2007, Ferrand filmed Americano, a personal journey from Patagonia to the Arctic.
Professor Ms. Andrea Martinez is the director of the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa. She has published numerous articles and chapters of books on the fight against poverty, and on violence and other forms of hardship faced by marginalized women. More recently, her involvement in the field of sexual and reproductive rights has led her to forge ties with university partners, Aboriginal women’s groups and NGOs in Latin America, with a view to promoting equity and social justice.
Mr. Youssef El-Khoury is a filmmaker and executive assistant of Dialogue New Brunswick(www.dialoguenb.org), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote closer ties between the Francophone and Anglophone communities in New Brunswick.
Mr. Gavin Sheppard is the co-founder and executive director of The Remix Project and has worked throughout Latin and Central America. The Remix model highlights the impact of urban entertainment and culture as tools for engagement and empowerment, and introduces elements of hands-on training and mentorship into the mix.
Mr. Rick Craig is the executive director of Justice Education Society (JES) of British Columbia, an organization that educates on the law and the justice system.
Ms. Jaime Koebel is an artist, performer and Aboriginal rights advocate who has committed her work to help Aboriginal youth.
Mr. Mario Renaud is executive director of the Centre for International Studies and Co-operation (CECI)and has more than 35 years of experience in development co-operation in many regions of the world including Central and Latin America.
Delegate Tom McSorley is executive director and director of programming at the Canadian Film Institute. He is also a sessional lecturer in Film Studies, at Carleton University and a freelance film and theatre critic.
